I replaced my KF with KF HD primarily for the enlarged display and secondary to use as a lightweight productivity device (Exchange email and bluetooth to attach a keyboard). The KF HD is beautiful and the next software update will fix the lags, similar to the upgrade processes of the KF 1st gen.
SCREEN - beautiful. E-reading fonts are sharp and I do not have issues when reading in the sun.
EMAIL - Exchange capable, allowing me to connect to work and the combination of my google calendar and work calendar is very nice indeed.
BLUETOOTH - I tested a Logitech bluetooth keyboard (meant for Ipad 2/3) and it worked well. Connection setup was easy.
SIDE LOAD APPS - I appreciate that I can still side load apps/content.
The price is great. The device, for my needs, I would rate a 5. The software I rate as a 4 - the display of similar items when you hover over an icon on the carousel is really too much in your face. I don't mind the advertisements on the unlock screen, I do mind it when I hover over an icon.
KF HD 7", a device to entertain myself while allowing me to still access work in a pinch.
Summary: Software is HORRIBLE. Seems like the software was developed for the base black/white Kindle and then some functionality was added for the Kindle Fire HD.
I really want to like this, and I suspect I'm even going to keep it for the Prime Lending Library and Prime Videos but Amazon needs to get its act together on the software if they want to keep selling these devices.
This is my first Kindle, so take that for what it's worth...
Web Browsing - Why do we even need Silk on these Wi-Fi only devices?
I've had this two days and have already hit pages that Silk can't figure out (All you get is a hyperlink with some text indicating that Amazon's servers are not able to process the page). Amazon needs to step out of the way and let the browser do its work... Hopefully, the fancy hardware has the horsepower to display a webpage without help from Amazon's own servers.
And NO, you cannot install any other Web Browsers on the KFHD.
Virtual Keyboard:
No Backspace Key... Huh!. I'd actually be OK with using the 'delete' key 3 rows down on the keyboard, except the 'back' key is very close to where the backspace key should be and even looks like backspace symbol "<-". Result, typo in a form field on a web page, think you are hitting backspace 3 times and all of a sudden you are 3 webpages back and have to start all over again.
Did the end users skip out on the testing sessions?
